Herland Roots was founded by Mark back in the spring of 2020, when lockdowns and uncertainty inspired him to finally take the plunge and create a veg patch on the farm to feed friends and family with fresh, local veggies.
Mark’s friends and supporters are always willing to lend a hand sowing, watering, planting and weeding when they are able. In particular, Herland’s farmer, confusingly also called Mark, will always be happy to help put a shift in whenever required!
Mark, ironically known as “Flash”, is the heart and soul of Herland Roots. Flash is anything but the name would suggest! You’re more likely to find him in some muddy, scruffy, well worn clothes out in the field, than in flashy clothes. If he ventures off the farm, he’ll replace his wellies with a pair of flip flops.
Colin joined the Herland Roots team in the summer of 2023 and has quickly made a huge impact on our market garden. Colin has brought with him a wealth of experience; from food retail, his work as a chef and from running his own food business. He is a invaluable part of the team, and you’ll often see him at farmers’ markets and delivering our food boxes.
Hatz loves to help out at Herland Roots. She loves to create recipes using fresh produce straight from the field and has been a key to the success of creating new no dig beds over the winter and early spring. A self confessed foodie, if you’re unsure what to do with some veg in your box, Hatz will inspire you to try something new and exciting!
Mark is the farmer and owner of Herland Farm. Although always busy working in the farmyard, with the cows or in the tractor, he always makes time for Herland Roots’ market garden, which is situated on the smallest field on the farm. A veteran vegetable grower, Mark is particularly passionate about the cauli and cabbage grown at Herland Roots. If there’s a problem, Mark will be able to find the solution!
